Christmas 2008 - The GOAL Mile, Christmas
Day
Posted on December 28th, 2008 by Brendan
Tuam AC had a very busy Christmas with athletes in action all over
the West. The fun started on Christmas morning when a number of our
members took part in the first Tuam GOAL Mile at Tuam Rugby Club and
everybody at Tuam AC would like to congratulate Tom Maher and his army
of volunteers for organizing such a fantastic event, we certainly hope
it becomes an annual one.
Tuam AC members spotted amongst the crowd were Rory Murphy, Nicola
Monaghan and Seamus Sweeney who was completing the first part of an
amazing 4 days of activity.
Christmas 2008 - Athenry 10K on St. Stephen's Day
Posted on December 28th, 2008 by Brendan
The Goal Mile provided a perfect opportunity for some last minute speed work ahead of the annual Fields of Athenry 10K Road Race which takes place every year on St Stephen’s Day and this race has now become so popular that entries were limited to the first 1000 runners and walkers who entered either online or were lucky enough to get one of the very few remaining entries available on the day.
Christmas 2008 - Westport 5K on December 28th
Posted on December 28th, 2008 by Brendan
The action moved to Westport on Sunday for the annual 5K Christmas
Road Race and one of our newer members Brian Sweeney made a very
impressive début for Tuam AC finishing very strongly in 23mins. Brian
is no stranger to running for Tuam having represented the town at All
Ireland level as a schoolboy and if this début performance is anything
to go by he could soon reach that level again.
A very special mention for Seamus Sweeney who completed his 3rd serious
race in 4 days as well as refereeing the local derby. He is an
inspiration to all athletes.

Tuam AC had a full team in action at the Marathon and the team training sessions really paid off because at the end of 26.2 miles only 7 minutes seperated the Tuam runners. Gearoid Healy was the first Tuam runner home in a very impressive marathon début time of 3h 18mins followed by Tommy Joe Whyte in 3h 20mins, Brendan Monaghan in 3h 23mins and Jim Daly in 3h 26mins. Well done to the four lads and they are all hoping to be back in 2009 for the 30th Anniversary

Tuam AC were out in force on Saturday for the annual 8K road race around the Streets of Galway. Over 2000 runners and walkers had entered for this race which must surely make it one of the biggest races in Ireland and Tuam AC had almost 20 members taking part. Tuam were hoping to get into the top 10 of the Men's and Women's team competition and were delighted to finish in 7th place in both categories. There were a number of outstanding individual performances and all eyes will be on Claregalway next Sat for the 10K race.
Swinford 5 Mile Road Race 2008
Posted on August 4th, 2008 by Brendan
It was great to see our club treasurer Patricia Monaghan back in action in Swinford after a long injury lay off. The rest obviously did her no harm as she finished the 5 mile course with no problems and was delighted to be back on the roads again. Dave Mullins had an impressive race recording a new PB and Brendan Monaghan returned from a cold to scrape in just under 33 mins.

A great turnout of runners in Balla on Saturday evening for the annual 10K. Some Tuam AC members were missing due to illness and injury but we still recorded fine performances on the night including Dave Mullins finishing strongly in 38 mins and Jim Daly running well to finish in just over 41 mins. Seamus Sweeney had another great run and is really looking forward to the Streets of Galway on 9th August .

Dave Mullins was not too far behind Dan and Jim Daly had a spectacular run finishing just outside the magic 32 min barrier in 32.05. Galway Senior Track and Field Championships
Posted on July 4th, 2008 by Brendan
A great crowd of senior and master athletes assembled in Dangan Track on Thursday 3rd July for the second night of this years championships. Most races had to be divided into an A and B race due to the huge numbers and well over 20 men took part in the two 1500m races. There was also two 200m sprints for men as well as women's races. The women's 1500m race was particularly impressive with great times posted by Laura Shaughnessy and Caroline Clancy of Loughrea, Michelle Lynch of GCH and Ann Carter Athenry AC. On the field a great Javelin competition was won by Mindikas the current All Ireland Champion who was in great form throwing almost 59m and Michael Breathnach of GCH who threw 49m at only 20 years of age he surely is a future All Ireland Champion. Mary Barrett was in top form for the ladies competition along with daughter Melissa and Tuam AC legend Nicola Monaghan was almost back to her best in the Javelin taking the bronze medal and looking forward to the All Ireland Finals in Antrim at the weekend where she is competing in Hammer and Discus and will be joined by sister Shauna who is throwing the shot and Tuam prodigy Ned Walsh Roberts who is throwing Javelin and Shot on Saturday in the U 14 Boys and we are very hopeful of a medal or two heading West on Sunday evening.
Claremorris 5 mile race 28 June 2008
Posted on June 29th, 2008 by Brendan
Tuam AC were very well represented in Claremorris for the annual DeCare 5 mile road race. This race was ran in much better conditions than last weeks race in Annaghdown and whilst it is a tough hilly course there is a nice fast downhill finish to look forward to at the end. Dan O'Rourke was once again the first Tuam man home in 29.04 closely followed by Dave Mullins in 29.40. Brendan Monaghan tried everything to break 32 mins but finished in 32.19 his initial disappointment was softened by the fact that he ran this race 30 seconds quicker than he ever has before. Jim Daly was just behind him for a change and two of Tuams finest Pat Flaherty and Seamus Sweeney had fantastic results Pat finished in 38 mins and Seamus put in a fine sub 40 performance. Tuam ladies were represented by All Ireland 10K champion Kathleen Hogan who decide to walk for a change and still managed to finish well under the hour mark. Paddy Gilmore also proved that hard training pays off when he finished in 53 mins.
Tuam AC Club Juvenile Championships 2008
Posted on June 26th, 2008 by Brendan
Our Juvenile club championship took place on Wed 25th June 2008 at our fantastic new training ground in Toghermore House. This is a stunning location beside the golf course and a great crowd of over 40 young athletes took part in a very enjoyable evening of athletics. The 7-12 age group competed in 60m sprint, 60m hurdles, 200m, high jump, ball throw and junior hammer. Points were allocated depending on their results and some outstanding performances were recorded, in fact they were so good it is not possible to mention them all on this page but all the athletes deserved their medals after a very busy night. The older athletes aged 12+ took part in sprints,hurdles,600m, 1500m, Hammer, Javelin and Shot. Once again some fantastic results were recorded including a number of new club records and a few PB's. All of these athletes took their place on the podium at the end of one of the best night's Tuam AC have ever had. The grand finale was a very hotly contested Mother's race ran in an electric atmosphere and a much more sedate father's race. Roll on 2009.
